What Is Kundalini Yoga? This
noble practice has been called the mother of all yogas. It is also considered
the most comprehensive of all yogas, combining meditation, prayer, physical
practices and breathing excercises. Kundalini is a flow of energy and
consciousness that exists within each of us and enables us to merge or
“yoke” the universal self. Fusing universal and individual
consciousness creates a divine union called “yoga”.
The kundalini system is vigilant about bringing good health and radiance from within. As you gain strength, you connect to your primal power. You become your true self. Your energy will shield you from sickness, harm and negativity. Your higher self will take you towards absolute success in your endeavors. One cannot talk about kundalini yoga and not talk about the history, origins and teachers who brought this esquisite practice to the 21st century. The existence of the practice is testimony to its virtues. The Upanishads, Hindu’s sacred scriptures that date back to the fifth century B.C., describe Kundalini, although the oral tradition reaches back even further into history. For thousands of years, this sacred science and technology was veiled in secrecy, passed along verbally from master to chosen disciple. Created in ancient times in India near Kashmir and the Pakistan border, by courageous individuals who lived in the face of extreme conditions: temperature and no housing, sickness with no medicine, little food with no refrigeration, poverty with an oppressive caste system, people suffered with no hope for improving their lives and living a healthy happy life. These brave people pioneered the kundalini yoga science exploring the technology of the body. Over centuries, exercises, rituals and vigilant practice became the foundation for a practice so profound it became a religious right and was practiced in the temple. Kings and noble people saw the poor peasants becoming radiant and beautiful, maintaining successful businesses and demanded to be taught this practice to better their privileged lives. Resisting further oppression the wise gurus communicated that this practice had great value and, was more profound than any other practice in existence. The gurus expected a commitment from all students to keep up with their practice and exchanged pay for teaching. The Kundalini community grew, and gurus began classes and training people how to teach. Through the years and constant wars and battles on the India/ Pakistan border the temples were plundered and the people exploited. The Kundalini community developed their own martial arts to defend their right to practice kundalini yoga and live a happy healthy and holy life. The vigilant practice of kundalini yoga established in ancient times is practiced just as fiercely today. Today the wars continue. The challenges of the human conditions continue. Kundalini yoga is now practiced worldwide. “The Kundalini yoga experience does not mean you have gone into a deep breathless trance and are beyond this world…it integrates you more fully with reality and gives you a broader vision and sensitivity so that you can act more efficiently.” "You should make yourself so happy that other people look at you and become happy.” -Yogi Bhajan, the chosen disciple for the 20th and 21st centuries, known as the Aquarian age. As a youth Yogi Bhajan mastered Kundalini yoga. Born Harbhajan Singh in what is now Pakistan to a family of healers and community leaders. Yogi Bhajan studied comparative religion and Vedic philosophy in his undergraduate years, going on to receive his Masters in Economics with honors from Punjab University. Years later, he earned his Ph.D. in communications psychology from the University of Humanistic Studies in San Francisco. He gave his first lecture at a Los Angeles high school gym on January 5, 1969. For over 32 years, he emerged as a religious, community and business leader with a distinguished reputation as a man of peace, world-vision, wisdom, and compassion. Today Kundalini training as taught by Yogi Bhajan exists at The Golden Temple of Amritzar, India and at Ram Das Puri in Espanola, New Mexico. Dana learned at Ram Das Puri with Yogi Bhajan and under the guidance of the 3hO. Dana was an official photographer for 3hO, photographing Yogi Bhajan,, gurus, musicians, community, classes, and white tantric yoga, which can be viewed on the 3hO website, books, publications and brochures.
