What Is Ashtanga Yoga? Ashtanga
yoga, translated from the sanskit as eight limbed, is an ancient system
of yoga delivered to the modern world by Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois. Sri
K Pattabhi Jois says, “this garland of yoga when diligently practiced
adorns our entire being with peace, health, radiance, and, ultimately
self-knowledge.”
This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a “If
we practice the science of yoga, which is useful to the entire human community
and which yields happiness both here and hearafter – if we practice
it without fail, we will then attain physical, mental, and spiritual happiness,
and our minds will flood towards the self.” Dana is a student of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, as were her other teachers, Tim Miller, David Swenson and Richard Freeman who all began training with guruji in the 1970’s. She is trained in teaching this system safely and true to the principals as passed on through the guruji. Students of the system are expected to maintain a regular practice and memorize the system from the first vinyasa. Dana believes this is a rewarding system as it is uniformly develops the body and is progressively more beneficial to the nervous system. At
Cho’s academy our advanced hatha classes are based in Ashtanga yoga. |
